5 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Bachata Class
Starting something new can be nerve-wracking, and walking into your first bachata class is no exception. We asked students at Dynamic Bachata Denver what they wish they had known before day one. Here are the five most common answers, straight from people who have been exactly where you are now.
1. You Really Do Not Need a Partner
This is the number one concern we hear, and it is completely unfounded. About 60 percent of our students come to class alone. In beginner bachata classes, partners rotate throughout the lesson, so you will dance with multiple people regardless of whether you brought someone. This is actually better for learning because you get used to different styles of leading and following.
Couples are welcome too, of course, but coming solo is the norm, not the exception. You will not be the odd one out.
2. Everyone Is Too Focused on Themselves to Judge You
Here is a secret: every single person in that room is worried about their own feet. Nobody is watching you and thinking, "Wow, that person is terrible." Beginners are concentrating on counting, experienced dancers are refining technique, and the instructors are focused on teaching. The bachata community in Denver is famously welcoming, and our classes at Dynamic Bachata Denver are judgment-free zones.
Mistakes are normal and expected. Laugh them off, keep moving, and remember that every advanced dancer in the room was once a beginner too.
3. Comfortable Shoes Matter More Than You Think
Do not overthink your outfit, but do think about your feet. Avoid shoes with heavy rubber treads like running shoes because they grip the floor and make turns difficult. Smooth-soled shoes, dance shoes, or even socks work much better for your first class. You want to be able to pivot and slide without your feet sticking.
As you progress and start exploring styles like Bachata Sensual or Bachazouk, you may want to invest in proper dance shoes, but for your first class, anything comfortable with a smooth sole will do.
4. The Basic Step Is Simpler Than You Expect
Bachata's basic step is four counts: step side, together, side, tap. That is it. You will learn it in the first five minutes of class. The rest of the hour builds on that foundation with turns, hand changes, and partner connection. Unlike dances with complex footwork patterns, bachata keeps the feet simple so you can focus on musicality and connection.
Over time, you can layer on complexity with styles like the Esencia Method, Endless Bachata, New Generation, and Island Touch. But day one is about getting comfortable with that basic four-count step, and you will get it faster than you think.
5. You Will Want to Come Back
This might be the most surprising thing our students report. What starts as "I will just try one class" quickly turns into a weekly habit. The combination of music, movement, and community creates something genuinely addictive, in the best way. Many of our students say bachata has become their favorite part of the week.
There is a reason the bachata scene in Denver keeps growing. Once you experience the feeling of dancing to a great song with a partner, you are hooked.
Bonus Tip: Take Advantage of the Free First Week
At Dynamic Bachata Denver, your first week is completely free. No credit card, no commitment. Use that week to try different class times, meet the instructors, and see which style speaks to you.
